Hello!
(I'm day one with GPS)

Question on the NEO-6p:

I'm trying to get a feel for the operational characteristics of this module.

Under optimal conditions, how long does it take (cold start) to output stable PPP data?

Once stable, if the module is moved quickly (running) to a new location, lets say 10 feet away, have I lost all my stability and must wait again (minutes) before stable PPP data again?

Thanks!

Hi Richard,
Welcome in this board, even virtually all threads and messages are only in German language here.

There's a quite exhaustive analysis which was already done in summer 2012 by a very experienced expert in using and researching this kind of GNSS hardware.

During three days there were 72 measurements of the fixing (one per hour) of a NEO-6P together with a TW2410 dual-feed antenna on a patch size optimized ground plane under open sky.

Environmental conditions were changing between dry and rainy within this timespan.

Results: all 2D Position values with less than 1m error after about 200-250 seconds and all 3D values after 500-600.

This was of course including reliable EGNOS reception which is a fundamental part of the u-blox PPP functionality (basically a combination of SBAS and carrier smoothing).

It's also meeting my own experiences of the NEO-6P in a lot of different tests by myself.

Especially when used with a good antenna, the NEO-6P seems to be even a bit better than the marketing releases of u-blox in most cases. :D

After achieving a PPP positioning enhancement, it's quite often immediately lost (or even slightly degraded) when moving but very fast recovered on the next position, too.

Dynamic measurements while moving are still enhanced (compared with similar non-PPP receivers resp. disabled PPP). Even if the fix level goes down from DGPS to 3D and more satellites are losing their carrier smoothing markup. But at the end of the day the dynamic scenarios (track quality) are also depending on dynamic profile settings and the way how someone is moving the antenna ...

Most important fact: if you're doing the typical surveying work by fixing all vertices one after another, you have to wait only one time for several minutes (before fixing the first of your points)!

I expect to tell some experiences with the NEO-7P (especially when used with external RTCM input) quite soon ...

Best regards,
Hagen

Thank-you Hagen! Good stuff!

I am waiting for my uBlox-7P module to arrive soon. I will couple this with a WIFI + MCU module as well.

I asked for a TCXO instead of the standard crystal time base hoping to get a better quality position data output.

My application requires a very small antenna with a foot print, lets say 2 inches round max (I assume an active antenna).

Do you have any thoughts or recommendations for an antenna for this?

Thanks!

My favorite for this application would be the new TW4421, a miniature dual-feed model and without any doubt the most bang for the buck at this time!

If possible in your assembly, give it at least these two inches as an additional ground plane (even about 3'' should be the optimal size).

Tach mal wieder ;-),

..."4.4.2 Signal tracking improvements
The signal phase lock sensitivity in GPS mode has been improved when signal strength is below 30 dBHz. Tracking reliability is therefore generally improved in difficult situations such as strong temperature fluctuation, unstable clocks or extremely high receiver mobility."...

( 1 min Messwertmittelung, gute Rundumsicht)
